about

Written and originally recorded sitting on the porch on Day Three of the Hurricane Ida blackout in New Orleans (our house was without power for eight days total–a pittance compared to residents in LaPlace, Grand Isle, Houma, Terrebonne and Lafourche Parishes). This is a bouncier country version, hopefully with the joyful resistance that makes post-hurricane recovery easier on the heart and soul.

lyrics

It’s Generacs and Sazeracs
in New Orleans tonight
look at the stars, y’all, in the blackout sky
above New Orleans tonight
All my friends have hit the open road
away from New Orleans tonight
It’s just my gal and my dog and the heat on the porch
in New Orleans tonight

Everyone’s asking “how’re you doin’”
“fine I guess, how about you?”
When the power’s coming back
no one’s got a clue

Checking on Miss Garmmane
and ol’ Mr. Bobby
said he stayed through the storm
‘cause his wife’s head is lately kinda foggy

It’s good that those who can
are getting out while they can
But if you’re here, stop on by
for a warm beer and a shot of rye

The Generacs and Sazeracs
make my head hum and buzz
how long can we hold in our hands
all them things that was?

That live oak fell on my neighbor’s house
lines for ice at the local Rouse
Red plastic gas cans battery fans
How much is left of that stuff that was?

When everyone gets back home
handshakes and hugs golden foam
then we get back to living life
Second lines waltzes and Tipitina’s lights
